HONOLULU, HI, January 30, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Hugh Jones, the new 2010 Hawaii State Bar Association (HSBA) president, is the first practicing public sector lawyer elected to the post. "I am deeply honored. Although I've been involved with the Bar Association for over 19 years, I think this next year will be the most memorable," he said.

Jones, a 49-year-old resident of Kailua, begins his term as president with several goals in mind. For one, he plans to utilize HSBA's newly renovated offices on the tenth floor of 1100 Alakea St. for more Bar gatherings and conferences. The Bar is also in the process of implementing a mandatory professional legal education program that he was involved with. The program will hold classes that can be attended in person or via the web. Although still in its infancy, Jones pledges to continue to develop the Senior Lawyers Division during his term. This division was created to allow more seasoned practitioners to mentor younger lawyers.

Government Lawyers Urged to Increase Presence
"I would also like to see more public sector lawyers who have not been involved in Bar governance, really create a presence in the HSBA," said Jones.
In 1989, Jones began working with the Attorney General's office because he was attracted by the promise of opportunities to make a real impact on society. In the mid-nineties, Jones worked on the Bishop Estate investigation, including a trial that removed two of the incumbent trustees. More recently, Jones created a charity oversight program in the Attorney General's office that requires organizations to publicly disclose information such as, program service costs and whether or not they pay professional fundraisers. "Now you can check the Attorney General's website when you are solicited through mail or by telemarketers and pull up the registration data for that organization," he added.
Jones is also interested in harnessing communication tools like podcasting and social media for the Bar. He leads by example at twitter.com/ joneslloyd1.
