/24-7PressRelease/ - ATLANTA, GA, May 31, 2008 - Meredith Boyd, the recently crowned Mrs. Georgia International 2008 will be the featured celebrity guest speaker at the inaugural Arthritis Walk in Gwinnett on May 31 at Rabbit Hill Park in Dacula. The event is part of Arthritis Month, an effort to raise funds and awareness to fight arthritis, one of the nation's leading causes of disability
Arthritis Walk Gwinnett is the only walk for arthritis north of Atlanta. Arthritis affects more than 1.7 million Georgians, 9,200 of whom are children. These Georgians join the 46 million Americans living with arthritis.
Boyd's personal platform issue is arthritis awareness and is a state and national spokesperson for the Arthritis Foundation. She was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 15. Her mission is to help raise funds and awareness for children, teens and young adults with childhood rheumatic diseases.
"For 18 years I have battled this disease and as a survivor of arthritis, I am honored to wear my blue hat this Saturday," Boyd said. "My motivation for raising awareness and helping raise needed funds for the Arthritis Foundation is to help ensure that no child go through the many surgeries, treatments and constant pain that I have endured. I'm walking today for those who struggle with this disease, pain is universal and so is encouragement."
Participants walk in honor of a friend or family member with arthritis. People with arthritis wear blue hats to signify their action in taking control of their condition. The event features a three-mile and one-mile course, with arthritis information and activities for the entire family. In many communities, pet owners are invited to bring their dogs along for the walk.
