ELMER, NJ, April 02, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- In an impressive show of support for Appel Farm Arts and Music Center, several well-known artists are donating their time and talent in an outdoor concert that will take place on Sunday June 7, 2009, 2:00-6:00 PM on the grounds of the Elmer, NJ arts center. Comcast presents With A Little Help From My Friends, a benefit concert supporting the Rising Young Artist Scholarship Fund that brings talented young people to the arts center's acclaimed summer camp, now entering its 50th year. Performers Livingston Taylor, John Gorka, Vance Gilbert, Guy Davis, Jeffrey Gaines, The Kennedys, The Nields, Phil Roy and Gillian Grassie will take the stage during the four-hour concert. Two bands are also slated to appear. Grey Eye Glances, a New Jersey group, has recently begun touring again and The Guggenheim Grotto, a Dublin, Ireland band, has also committed to being part of the line-up. It is likely that more artists will join the lineup as their schedules allow.
Close to 25% of students who attend the summer camp do so with financial assistance. Children from at-risk families in Camden, Newark, Trenton, New York City, Salem County and more attend a four-week session that immerses them in learning and creativity, and offers them an experience that for many can be life changing. The camp was recently named Favorite Arts/Theater Camp in the Discover Jersey Arts 2008 People's Choice Awards.
"We have worked with many musicians through the years, and several of them have been back to Appel Farm more than once," explained Sean Timmons, Artistic Director of Appel Farm. " When I asked this group of our loyal friends to help us raise money for the summer camp, they didn't hesitate. This is an extraordinary outpouring of support from some very extraordinary people."
The Sunday concert will also offer the chance for people to a take a free arts class at Appel Farm's art studios. Both adults and children can sign up when they arrive at the concert to sample one of the many offerings in ceramics, painting, crafts and more. Arts education is an important part of Appel Farm's year-round activities. Classes for children and adults on-site in the art studios, arts education in the schools, and the overnight summer camp benefit people from near and far.
Arts & Music Festival Takes Hiatus
The Board of Trustees of Appel Farm also announced a decision to take a one-year hiatus from producing the Annual Arts & Music Festival. A long-time staple of music festivals in the Delaware Valley area, and one of the largest events in New Jersey, the Festival has hosted some of the greatest singer/songwriters of the contemporary music scene, along with helping to launch the careers of many young artists. The Festival celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2008, and both Board and staff have indicated a desire to take the current year off to re-envision aspects of the Festival, and to plan for an event in 2010 that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Appel Farm Arts and Music Center.
"The Arts and Music Festival is our signature event," noted David Manders, President of the Board of Trustees. "We felt it was important to take time to plan for the important milestone of our anniversary. Bringing great artists to our region is a big part of what Appel Farm is renowned for. Undoubtedly, the Festival in 2010 will be a centerpiece of the celebration."
