Dr. San Agustin is a professor of pediatrics, clinical epidemiology, and social medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Montefiore Medical Center, a teaching hospital in the Norwood section of the Bronx, New York. Working in this capacity since 1997, she previously spent 21 years as the Director of Ambulatory Care Medicine at North Central Bronx Hospital, which she established. She also previously worked as Director of Montefiore-Morrisania Comprehensive Health Care Center from 1968 to 1976. From 1997 to 2001, Dr. San Augustin was Director of the Department of Primary Care Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, which she Medical Center, which she established.
Recognized internationally, Dr. San Agustin was key to the integration of medical education and training of physicians in the primary healthcare delivery system in the United States. She established the primary care residency program in pediatrics and internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital. She also helped to establish the international pediatric fellowship program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. San Agustin is well-known for serving as the founding president of the Philippine Ambulatory Pediatric Association where she provides continuous guidance in programs that are focused on advocacy and coalition building. She has worked as a consultant for various organizations throughout her career, including for the international branch of the Department of Health and for the president of New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.
Dr. San Agustin maintains membership with various organizations such as the American Public Health Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Pediatrics Society, the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Society of General Internal Medicine. Furthermore, she has spent time as a visiting professor at various institutions, including UCLA, Ben-Gurion University in Israel, and New York University.
Recognized numerous times during her tenured career, Dr. San Agustin received a Bela Schick Award and an Altran Foundation Scholarship Award by Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She also received an Outstanding Alumnus for Medical Education by the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society in America, a Maternal and Child Health Services Award by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington, D.C., a Community Leadership Award by the Bronx Community Health Network, Inc., and a Centennial Award as a Builder of Medicine by the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. Dr. San Agustin received a 2007 Most Influential Filipina Woman Award in the U.S. from the Filipina Women's Network in the U.S.
A diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. San Agustin received her MD at the University of the Philippines in 1957. She then completed her internship and residency at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, where she also served as chief resident in pediatrics, and then spent another two years as chief of physical development in the research division at the National Research Center in the Philippines. Married to Barry Shaw since 1969, she is the proud mother of four.
