Myron T. Steele Honored for his Contributions to the Legal Field

    DOVER, DE, December 24, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Chief Justice (Retired) Myron T. Steele, a Partner at Potter Anderson & Corroon, LLP, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence throughout his illustrious career in the legal field.

Myron T. Steele is the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Delaware. He was appointed in 2004 by Governor Ruth Ann Minner, becoming the seventh Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court. During his tenure, he presided over many of the State's most significant litigation, including a variety of disputes with respect to the proper governance of Delaware corporations and alternative business entities, publishing over 400 judicial opinions. Upon stepping down in November 2013, he joined the Delaware law firm of Potter Anderson as a partner. Soon to be celebrating his 45th year in the legal field, he also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at The University of Pennsylvania Law School, University of Virginia Law School, and Pepperdine University Law School. Myron T. Steele speaks and writes frequently on corporate document interpretation and corporate governance. Most recently, he wrote an essay entitled "The Moral Underpinning of Delaware's Modern Corporate Fiduciary Duties" (26 Notre Dame J.L. Ethics & Pub. Pol'y 3 (2012). An article he co-authored with J.W. Verret entitled Delaware's Guidance: Ensuring Equity for the Modern Witenagemot formed the basis for a keynote speech to the Business Law Section at the 2007 American Bar Association Annual Meeting. Myron T. Steele is also is an advisor to the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association and served on the Board of the National Center for State Courts.

Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, Myron T. Steele served as a Supreme Court Justice (2000-2004), Vice Chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery (1994-2000), Resident Judge of the Kent County, Delaware Superior Court (1990-1994) and as Superior Court Judge (1988-1990). He also served as a Deputy Attorney General, Delaware Senate Attorney, and a litigation partner at Prickett, Jones & Elliott. When asked to name the factors that led to his success, Myron T. Steele cited good luck, good friends and his leadership skills.

Myron T. Steele received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Delaware, and a JD and Master of Laws from the University of Virginia School of Law. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army and retired as a Colonel in the Delaware Army National Guard. He was recently inducted into Worldwide Registry and named to the National Association of Corporate Directors Hall of Fame. The Directorship Magazine ranked Mr. Steele as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Corporate Governance in the United States. Ethisphere Magazine ranked Mr. Steele second in its list of the 100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics for 2007. Lawdragon Magazine has consistently placed Mr. Steele among its annual Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America and Top Judges in America.

In July 2012, the Conference of Chief Justices of the United States elected Mr. Steele president for 2012-2013 and chairman of the board of directors of the National Center for State Courts. In October 2012, the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform honored Mr. Steele with the Judicial Leadership Achievement Award. Myron T. Steele is a member of the Judicial Conference Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction and the American Board of Trial Attorneys.
