With more than 60 years of experience in materials engineering, Dr. Dayananda recently achieved professor emeritus status with Purdue University, having worked at the school since 1965. During his tenure, he served as a professor from 1975 to 2017, an associate professor from 1970 to 1975, an assistant professor from 1966 to 1970, and as a postdoctoral research associate from 1965 to 1966. Additionally, he served as the interim head of the School of Materials Engineering in 1999, and as associate head from 2005 to 2007. Early in his career, he was a senior research assistant with the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, India from 1957 to 1958. He also worked as visiting professor with the University of Munster in Germany and the Indian Institute of Science, in 1980 and 1992, respectively.

Instrumental in the growth and success of the school of materials engineering at Purdue University since becoming a member of the faculty more than 50 years ago, Dr. Dayananda made several new discoveries in the field of multicomponent diffusion and was responsible for mentoring more than 50 materials engineering students through their MS and Ph.D. programs. Dr. Dayananda's expertise involves both intrinsic and interdiffusion in a variety of systems, including aluminides, silicides, stainless steels, high temperature alloys, coatings, nuclear fuels and claddings. He discovered the phenomenon of zero-flux planes and reversals, and was honored at a special TMS symposium held in 2006 for his various contributions in multicomponent diffusion.

Dr. Dayananda began his career as a student at the University of Mysore in Karnataka, India, obtaining a B.S. (Hons), degree in 1955 before going on to earn a Diploma of the Indian Institute of Science (D.I.I.Sc.) in 1957 at the Indian Institute of Science. He worked at the institute as a senior research assistant for a year and in 1958 he traveled to the United States to pursue his graduate studies in Metallurgical Engineering at Purdue University upon the recommendation of an advisor who had worked under the internationally renowned thermodynamics expert, Reinhard Schuhmann, Jr. He earned his MS in 1961 and a PhD in 1965 and joined the Purdue faculty in 1966.

Dr. Dayananda has edited four books and has contributed more than 120 articles to professional journals such as Acta Materialia, Metallurgical Transactions, Philosophical Magazine, Journal of Nuclear Materials, Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion. Furthermore, he was responsible for writing a 300-page book chronicling the history of the school of materials engineering at Purdue University. He is a member of The Metallurgical Society, the American Society of Engineering Education, and Sigma Xi, and is an elected fellow of the American Society for Materials International. In recognition of his efforts in the field of education and research, the American Society for Materials International rewarded him with a 2017 Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award. He has been named Best Teacher by the school of materials engineering at Purdue University in 1982 and again in 1990, and later received an Engineering Faculty Engagement/Service Excellence Award in 2003. Married to Prema Kumari Rao since 1972, he and his wife recently established an endowment for a Fellowship in an effort to support the MSE graduate students at Purdue University.
