A career educator, Dr. Demerdash began as a teaching assistant of electrical engineering at Cairo University in 1964. Relocating to the U.S. two years later, he earned a similar position at the University of Pittsburgh from 1966 to 1968. Taking a brief hiatus for four years to work as an engineer for Westingthouse Electrical Corporation in Pittsburgh, he returned to education as an assistant professor of electrical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, where he progressed to associate professor and full professor over the course of just a few years.
From 1983 to 1994, Dr. Demerdash taught as a professor in the same capacity at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY, before beginning his career at Marquette University. A Catholic Jesuit university located near the heart of downtown Milwaukee, Dr. Demerdash currently serves a professor at Marquette University since 1994, and briefly served as department chairman.
A fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, where he also served as subcommittee chairman twice, Dr. Demerdash was also a member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society, where he was awarded with a Machines Committee Prize Paper Award in 2013. Dr. Demerdash is also a member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society, where he has been a distinguished lecturer since 1987. Furthermore, he was the recipient of a Prize Paper Award in both 1993 and 2012, a Machinery committee Prize Paper Award in 1993, and a Working Group Award in 1994. Dr. Demerdash is also a member of the distinguished speaker program Industrial Electronics Society since 1991, as well as a member of the Electromagnetics Academy.
Some of Dr. Demerdash's biggest achievements in his field have included the development of three-dimensional, finite element vector potential and coupled 3-D vector potential-scaler potential methods of solution of electromagnetic fields in electric devices, as well as time-stepping coupled finite element-state space computer simulation models, and the design of electronically operated/controlled AC and brushless DC motor drives and condition monitoring and fault diagnostics in electric machines and drive systems.
The results of his research earned Dr. Demerdash's work to be published in more than 115 articles in various professional journals. His work experience has also earned him numerous accolades that have included a Certificate of Recognition by NASA in 1979, a Certificate of Teaching Excellence by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1980, a Nikola Tesla IEEE Technical Field Award in 1999, an Outstanding Research Award by the College of Engineering by Marquette University in 2004, and a Lawrence G. Haggerty Faculty Research Excellence Award, also by Marquette University, in 2015. Included in close to 40 editions of Who's Who, they include Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
