For over 61 years, Nancy has been a leader in her community as an elementary school teacher, artist, and a noted historian. In addition to assisting with research in community cultural preservation projects, she has taken active roles in preserving local historic landmarks. Her chapter about the history of Sequoia High School appeared in the book, "Redwood City: A Hometown History," and recently her article on Sequoia High School was released in 2017 in "Through the Years: Celebrating Redwood City's Sesquicentennial" published by Climate Magazine.
Born in Stockton, California to John B. and Marjorie Lebkicher in 1939, Ms. Oliver entered education as a summer playground director with the recreation department of Redwood City, California. She worked her way to a BA with honors at San Jose State University in 1961, and went on to teach first grade at the Redwood City Elementary School District for two years. In 1963, she married Douglas C. Oliver and had two children, Charles and Elaine. She also joined the Ukiah, California Unified School District as a kindergarten teacher.
From 1976 to 1981, Ms. Oliver served as a kindergarten associate teacher with the San Carlos Elementary School District, and briefly as a department store shopper with Macy's in San Francisco. From 1973 to 1981, she worked in San Carlos with the White Oaks parent teacher association as a newsletter editor, as well as a leader in the Girl Scouts and on the board of the Sequoia High School Educational Foundation. In the '80s, she worked with SeriPrinters as a silk-screen printer.
Ms. Oliver joined the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in the '60s, was President of two branches, held numerous offices and has served as chair of the historic preservation section since 1979, nursing her love of history in the San Carlos Area. Her duties included research positions, as well as editing materials for tours, newsletters, and booklets. In the 1950s, Ms. Oliver was a member of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, a Masonic community service and leadership group, and continued working in the '70s and '80s as an adult leader. A founding member of the Sequoia High School Alumni Association, she coordinated the Centennial Celebration, served as President, and continues as secretary and newsletter editor; the Association honored her with the 1998 Unsung Hero Award and the 2010 Purple Patriot Award.
In 1995, she founded the San Carlos Heritage Association and conducts annual historical walking tours. Additionally, Ms. Oliver is a member and current Chairman of the San Mateo County Historical Resources Advisory Board, a former president and member since 2008 of the Redwood City Inter-Service Club Coordinating Council, and is active on the Vestry and in the Altar Guild at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Redwood City.
For unfailing public service and dedication to her community, Ms. Oliver was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, and the 2000 to 2001 volume of Who's Who in the West. She is a noted needlecrafts artist, having served with the quilt committee of the Rainbow Girls since 1989, and enjoys walking, calligraphy, as well as classical music.
