Napoleon Gomez Urrutia Honored for Human Rights Advocacy

Dr. Gomez Urrutia promotes the defense of labor rights and human rights in the workforce



    BURNABY, BC, March 04, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Napoleon Gomez Urrutia, President and General Secretary of National Union of Mine, Metal, Steel and Allied Workers of the Mexican Republic, was recently named a VIP member of Worldwide Branding. Dr. Gomez Urrutia has 20 years of professional experience, with 12 years as the president and general secretary of the National Union of Mine, Metal, Steel and Allied Workers of the Mexican Republic. Throughout his career, he has set himself apart through his skill in economic development and planning. On a daily basis, he is responsible for promoting the defense of labor rights and human rights for the workforce, while also representing union members in collective bargaining agreements.

Dr. Gomez Urrutia is a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Universidad Autonomo de Nuevo Leon and Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey. His specialties include theories of economical development and social and economic planning. His book, "Collapse of Dignity: The Story of Mining Tragedy and the Fight Against Greed and Corruption in Mexico" is available in Spanish, French and English, and can be purchased on Amazon.

Looking back, Dr. Gomez Urrutia attributes his success to his hard work, as well as his commitment to his values. He became involved in his profession because he was passionate about addressing the injustice that is present for workers in Mexico, particularly in the mining industry.

Dr. Gomez Urrutia received a Ph.D. in economic planning and development from the University of Oxford in 1974, a diploma in economic development, also from the University of Oxford, in 1970, and a Bachelor of Economics in economic theory and macroeconomics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he graduated with honors in 1966. He is a member of the International Metalworkers Federation, the International Federation of Chemical Energy and Mining Sectors and the University Club of Mexico. In 2014, Dr. Gomez Urrutia received the Arthur Svensson International Prize for Trade Union Rights, as well as a Gold Medal for "Collapse of Dignity," through The Independent Publishers of New York. He was also the recipient of an International Meany-Kirkland Human Rights Award and an Edelstam Prize. In years to come, Dr. Gomez Urrutia hopes to continue fighting for social justice while working to attain better working conditions for the Mexican people.
