Narconon Drug Rehab Georgia. "However, we also are very active in the community at what we consider our most important work: teaching young children about the dangers of drug abuse."
Part of the work done over the years by
Narconon Georgia has been drug education lectures in churches, after-school programs, Boy's and Girl's Clubs, High Schools and Middle Schools.
"I think there is a direct correlation between the drug education lectures given to inner-city youth in Atlanta and the subsequent drop in crime in that same area," comments Gordon Weinand, spokesperson for Narconon Georgia. "The police are always happy to see us. They know that drug-free children will be drug-free adults.
"Most drug education efforts in the past have focused on 'scare tactics'. We tell the children the truth about drugs, and they can then make an educated decision on their own. They are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for."
Over the years, thousands of surveys have shown that talking to children about drug abuse and the dangers of drugs does have a positive impact on their lives. One 8th grader commented: "Thank you for this wonderful video. It taught me how not to follow my friends who choose to do drugs."
Organizations such as the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University have done extensive research on
drug education. This research has shown that while almost every child in school today will be offered an illegal drug at some time during their school years, proper drug education and parental guidance can markedly help them avoid the perils of
drug abuse.
"Talk to your children," comments Ms. Rieser. "Along with learning the ABC's, children need to learn that drugs are bad for you, from marijuana and cocaine to prescription drugs that are taken non-medically."
