Narconon Freedom Center, a residential drug rehab program in Albion Michigan, in awareness of the ever-growing problem of drug abuse in the state, is increasing the
drug education and prevention to try to stop addiction before it starts.
This last week, the center set a booth set up at the Calhoun Country Fair in Marshall, Michigan to help educate the community on
drug addiction throughout the state and offer help to those already struggling with substance abuse problems. The Calhoun County Fair is the oldest continuous running fair at the same location since 1848 where the grounds are owned and operated by the Calhoun County Agricultural and Industrial Society (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization).
"This year at the fair our main focus was to bring attention to the abuse of prescription drugs by passing on information about the actual effects of these drugs; not only the "side effects" but the addictive potential," says Megan Werner-Brennan, Dissemination Supervisor at
Narconon Freedom Center. "Today we take what the doctor gives us, and some drugs are taken without proper knowledge of the negative consequences that can come with them."
"We are trying hard to get the word to the community about the drug use that is being seen in the schools currently and across the community," Megan explains. "With National Recovery Month and Red Ribbon Week right around the corner it is more important than ever that we educate our community about drug abuse and addiction."
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health Reports that 9% of the population of the state of Michigan reported illicit drug use within a one-year period; many of whom are addicted to prescriptions. In addition, the
drug problem in the state has gotten so bad that 50% of school aged children have tried drugs before they graduate high school.
