Visual Basic 6, or VB6 as it is called, was a programming language widely in use prior to Microsoft's introduction to .NET. Even though it has been quite some time since technologies have evolved past VB6, VB6 is still in use widely today.
VB6 is a great choice when having to perform low level communication tasks. For example, it is much easier to communicate with a piece of hardware in VB6, or hook into the Windows API, than it is in many other applications.
