LOS ANGELES, CA, April 22, 2010
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Addiction is difficult to treat because of the multiple factors that contribute to addiction. This is one reason why over 70 percent of those suffering from substance abuse relapse within one year. With recent television shows such as "Celebrity Rehab," the public is being exposed to the realities and difficulties of addiction and those whom it affects.
A 2005 study published by The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse highlights the advantages neurofeedback therapy in treating addiction. Eighty percent of subjects in this study were abstinent one-year post treatment. The study noted that the success of its subjects may lie in neurofeedback therapy's ability to allow participants to better tolerate stress, anxiety, and anxiety-eliciting situations, which are evident during the initial phases of recovery.
A 1999 study entitled "Effect of EEG Biofeedback on Chemical Dependency," reported that the dropout rate for those using neurofeedback after the first forty-five days was only six percent, while the control group, that did not have the benefit of neurofeedback, had an attrition rate of almost 33 percent. One of the biggest problems is getting the addict to remain in treatment because they have such poor impulse control in every facet of their lives, not just regarding drug or alcohol use. Neurofeedback treatments calmed their nervous system enough for them to remain and continue receiving therapy (group, family, and individual), giving them a much better chance for sustained recovery.
The basic premise of EEG neurofeedback is to achieve a state of self-regulation. Addiction sufferers need to be able to control themselves in those vital moments when things seem to fall apart or get tough mentally. The hope that these studies give to families is that their loved ones can effectively combat their problem by seeking help instead of returning to a cycle of self-destruction when the moment of choice arrives.
