OLD BRIDGE, NJ, January 19, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The First Energy Group is actively partnering with Pennsylvania business owners so they can take advantage of an innovative, new energy grant. With the new Small Business Energy Efficiency Grant program, PA businesses can now get a 25% match, up to $25,000, for implementing energy savings programs.

Acting Secretary John Hanger of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently announced the grant. He cited it as an ideal opportunity for Pennsylvania small businesses to improve their energy efficiency while managing higher energy prices.

According to Jay Lopatin, Vice President of The First Energy Group, "There has never been a better time for Pennsylvania businesses to cut energy costs, decrease their environmental footprint, and get paid for doing it."

The grant applies to energy efficiency improvements on systems like lighting, heating, cooling, refrigeration and process machinery, as well as insulation and weatherization projects. The First Energy Group can typically reduce companies energy expenditures by 30% to 40%. By applying the additional 25% match, companies save on upfront expenses and get permanent long term savings. A variety of creative financing options to defray costs are also available.

The First Energy Group works directly with the DEP, structuring customized energy effectiveness plans that leverage incentive programs like the Small Business Energy Efficiency grant. The benefits for businesses go beyond expenditure management and tax savings. Lighting improvements, for example, have been tied to increased employee productivity and job satisfaction.

"It's imperative," says Lopatin, "to apply and implement these programs swiftly. With the total grant package capped at $3 Million and dispensed on a first-come basis, only business owners who can move quickly are liable to get any benefit from this program." The First Energy Group can typically get to a business within one week to prepare a free basic Energy Audit and eligibility assessment.

This grant is the first available through the Alternative Energy Investment Fund, part of Governor Edward G. Rendell's Energy Independence Strategy. Eligible companies must be independent, for-profit business with 100 employees or fewer, located in Pennsylvania. Deadline for application is May 1, 2009 and is ideal for manufacturers, retailers and service providers. The First Energy Group provides a no-cost consultation to help businesses determine if this is an appropriate program for them, as well as their eligibility.
