/24-7PressRelease/ - NEW DELHI, INDIA, April 11, 2007 - Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, European Commission, said in a statement reported on March 9, 2007 by HindustanTimes.com that as organic products from India are now in accordance with EU norms, India should consider exporting its organic products to European markets.

Boel, on March 9, 2007, was at the Kalina campus of the University of Mumbai to deliver a lecture on Globalization, Agriculture and Rural Development – Opportunities and Challenges for EU-India co-operation. Boel is leading a business relegation from Europe visiting India to look into the business prospects in agriculture and food processing industries.

The business of organic food segment is growing gradually. In 2005, EU (with 25 member states) had approx six million hectare of land either under organic farming or was being transformed to organic production.

This equates to an impressive 2% hike over 2004. During the same timeframe, the total number of organic cultivators increased by over 6%, and most of the new member states of EU are particularly showing interest in organic farming.

"In Europe we have a huge market for organic products," Boel said.

"India should improve its capabilities in terms of infrastructure, cold storage facilities. India now conforms to the EU's standards of organic produce and that was crucial," she explained.

Organic production has grown into one of the most active sectors in EU. From 1998 to 2002, the total organic UAA (Utilized Agricultural Area) rose by around 21% annually. "The organic food market in the EU is diversified," Boel stated. "The EU supports organic producers."

The RNCOS report “European Organic Food Market” says, rising health and environment awareness in most of the countries of Western Europe, Japan, Australia, North America, and some regions of the developing world is thrusting the development of organic food and beverage industry. In Europe, Germany and UK would be the chief geographical markets for the progress of organic food market.

The market research report gives a comprehensive analysis of the European organic food market supported by statistical data from authentic sources. The report gives a detailed market development in Europe by market performance, product, and organic agricultural land. Consumer behavior and government support in various European markets are discussed. An overview of EU regulations, facts on international standards, administrative procedures, and certification schemes are also provided.
