New Book Tells What's Wrong with American Healthcare

In "Ex-Acute," former hospital CEO and USC Professor Dr. Josh Luke tells Americans what they need to know

Today, under the Affordable Care Act, healthcare providers are paid not based on the number of patients in beds or procedures performed, but instead on the value of the care they provide.

LOS ANGELES, CA, July 19, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Former hospital CEO Josh Luke, Ph.D., reveals forces changing healthcare and helps people prepare for these shifts in his new book, Ex-Acute, A Former Hospital CEO tells all on What's Wrong with American Healthcare, What every American needs to know.

A USC professor who became a hospital CEO at age 32, Luke is considered a thought leader and futurist on the shift in healthcare from fee-for-service to value-based care. "In the fee-for-service era, doctors learned quickly that the financial fruits of over-admitting and over-utilizing (extending patient's length of stay in facilities) were plentiful. This led to what has turned into a broken system," he explains in Ex-Acute.

Today, under the Affordable Care Act, healthcare providers are paid not based on the number of patients in beds or procedures performed, but instead on the value of the care they provide. This has forced a change to managed care that will continue no matter who wins the election, he says.

Luke regularly does television and radio interviews, and "outs" doctors and hospitals in the book on issues that suggest patient health needs are not always the top priority when consulting a physician. His background thrust him to the forefront of the industry as the leading executive expert on hospital readmission prevention, a key component of ObamaCare as evidenced by his best-selling 2015 book Readmission Prevention: Solutions Across the Provider Continuum.

Luke worked 15 years in healthcare administration, including a decade as a hospital CEO and as an administrator in skilled nursing, acute care, home healthcare and hospice care. In Ex-Acute and in his public speeches, he uses compelling personal stories to illuminate topics such as caring for aging parents and young children, facing the Alzheimer's epidemic and understanding how capitalism drives healthcare for consumers.

About Dr. Luke: Author, speaker, futurist and healthcare expert Josh Luke, Ph.D., is a USC professor who became a hospital CEO at age 32, and author of the new book Ex-Acute, A Former Hospital CEO tells all on What's Wrong with American Healthcare, What every American needs to know. Luke achieved his early career dream of working in sports marketing at a young age, flying on private jets with famous athletes, but made a career change at age 32 to healthcare when he grew frustrated with his grandmother's inconsistent care. Today he energizes audiences to tackle change by keeping an eye on the future.
