New Jersey Eye Doctors Offer Help for Dry Eye and Eyelid Problems with LipiFlow

"Due to advances in Vectored Thermal Pulsation technology the eye doctors at The Eye Care & Surgery Center can treat MGD, dry eye and related eyelid problems such as blepharitis using a device called LipiFlow(R)," stated Joel Confino, M.D.

WESTFIELD, NJ, January 04, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "There are many causes of dry eye. As a corneal specialist I see patients with all types of ocular surface disease. For certain, the most common cause of dry eye problems is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) which is a blockage or some other abnormality of the tiny glands in your eyelids," explained Joel Confino, M.D., Corneal Specialist, Cataract & LASIK Surgeon at The Eye Care & Surgery Center.

About Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) & LipiFlow
Meibomian glands are tiny glands in your eyelids that secrete oil into the tear film to prevent it from evaporating. When the Meibomian Glands become blocked or do not function properly and the tears evaporate too quickly it results in symptoms of dryness, irritation, redness, watering, grittiness and even pain. MGD is a leading cause of dry eye syndrome. MGD also may predispose you to an eyelid problem called blepharitis which can cause your eyelids to become red, crusty and inflamed.

"The first step in treating MGD is making an accurate diagnosis. By using the LipiScan device we are able to perform high definition imaging of the glands quickly and clearly right in the comfort of the office setting," shared Dr. Confino. Traditionally, eye doctors have used warm compresses, digital massage and eye drops to attempt to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Today, thanks to advances in Vectored Thermal Pulsation (VTP) technology the eye doctors at The Eye Care & Surgery Center are able to treat MGD, dry eye and related eyelid problems such as blepharitis using a device called LipiFlow . LipiFlow is an electronic device cleared by the FDA for the treatment of MGD by removing blockages of the glands and restoration of their function so that they provide normal oily secretions for a healthy tear film. LipiFlow is an in-office procedure that uses directed heat and gentle pressure to liquefy and express the contents of the Meibomian glands.

"Dry eye is a very common eye problem that has a significant impact on the quality of life of those it affects due to the physical discomfort and visual disability it causes. Although the symptoms of dry eye improve with treatment, we can achieve the best results for patients when we treat the root cause of dry eye rather than the symptoms," summarized Dr. Confino.
