ORLANDO, FL, May 20, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- As the scientists look for energy solutions for the future, they may want to turn to two New School Preparatory students who won top honors at the University of Central Florida's 10th annual FSEC EnergyWhiz Olympics.
The New School students participated in the Solar Energy Cook-Off and Junior Solar Sprint events.
Marielle Corkum and Ayla Boyne, both in fourth grade at the school, won first place in the Solar Energy Cook-Off. They won with a meal of marinated shrimp kabobs with vegetables, Caribbean rice with pineapple, papaya and toasted coconut, an exotic fruit salad and corn on the cob. The judges were really impressed with their attitude and presentation, as well as their menu. Their meal was so fantastic and creative that the recipe will be included in a solar cookbook being assembled by the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) in Cocoa.
The Solar Energy Cook-Off challenges students to use scientific and creative thinking, teamwork and experimentation to design and build solar cookers. The event is an excellent opportunity to combine the teachings of many scientific and social principles with a fun and exciting atmosphere.
As a team, four other New School students, consisting of Alex Greear, Ramsey Pantaleon, Erykah Officer-Perez and Carolyn Mundy, won second place in the sixth-grade division of the Junior Solar Sprint event with their CAREcar. Jared Angle and Antoinette Nelson also helped design the car. The entirely solar-powered model cars were judged on technology, craftsmanship and appearance. As part of the second aspect of the event, the cars also competed on a track against other solar teams.
With the hopes of finding cleaner and more environmentally-friendly solutions to the transportation issues in the United States, competitions like the EnergyWhiz Olympics can help today's youth fix present and future problems. They will make decisions balancing mobility, environmental and economic needs and develop new vehicles to fuel progressive technologies. New School Preparatory understands this and appreciates the diverse and competitive environment of the competition as well. The school always encourages their students to participate interesting and innovative events like FSEC's EnergyWhiz Olympics.
