-- Iron Bird Packaging, a Southern California based retailer of packaging and pharmacy supplies, is encouraging consumers to do their part to save the earth by recycling or reusing the bags after bringing them home. A portion of the company's small paper bags are made of recycled material; however, recycling or reusing the bags after taking one home from a pharmacy or grocery store allows the bag to go even further towards having a healthier planet.
"We are committed to doing our part to reduce wastefulness, and we encourage others to do the same. These bags are very durable and rarely are they destroyed after one use," said Ashot Rostomian, President and CEO of Iron Bird Packaging. "They can be recycled, re-used for small household items, or upcycled into new items."
Upcycling is a new word which refers to the process of using materials that would otherwise be deemed trash to serve another purpose. One such use is to create crafts and art out of the bags. Parents of small children can turn the bags into puppets using paints, crayons, and construction paper. Even older children and adults can get involved in making something out of these prescription bags.
Humble materials like paper bags and prescription bags have been turned into art projects and installations. French artists Christo and Jeanne Claude, famous for erecting orange gates in New York City's Central Park, have created works of art using packaging materials dating as far back as the 1970s. Florida based artist Doug Rhodehamel has an ongoing worldwide project, called the Spore Project, where people construct mushrooms out of paper bags and install them wherever the urge strikes. To date, the mushrooms have appeared on seven continents. While Rhodehamel's project only seeks to spread the joy and creativity of art, the Hillsborough County Florida Homeless Coalition has used paper bags to bring awareness to its homeless population.
"We encourage people to get creative and think outside the box when it comes to giving these bags a new life," said Rostomian.
