/24-7PressRelease/ -- In October 2011, a study featuring the BioniCare Knee System by VQ OrthoCare , was published in Rheumatology News. The 20-month long study, conducted by VQ OrthoCare to analyze treatment options for osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, concluded that patients with OA who combined BioniCare, a non-invasive pulsed electrical stimulator, with the joint unloading OActive knee brace saw a substantial improvement of knee functionality in a shorter amount of time than patients who used the treatment options separately. The results show that the combination of the BioniCare Knee System and OActive knee brace is more effective than any other treatment option for osteoarthritis of the knee. Patients with OA who use the treatment combination have a greater ability to quicken their recovery time and defer more severe, high-risk treatment options such as total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The implementation of the BioniCare and OActive brace combination by healthcare providers could potentially save the healthcare industry an estimated $400 million annually in TKA deferrals .
According to the study, in 2006, more than 542,000 TKAs were performed, costing the American healthcare industry $9.8 billion. Of the TKAs performed, 328,000 were for OA patients age 65 years and older. With a growing baby boomer population, these numbers are expected to skyrocket in the next ten years. The swelling of this population is expected to put a massive financial strain on the healthcare industry. The deferral of TKAs for this population alone will assist in shouldering that financial burden. In addition to the cost-savings, the BioniCare and OActive brace combination provides OA patients with an alternative treatment option, as compared to the high-risks and recovery time associated with surgery.
"The BioniCare and OActive brace combination offers patients affected by OA an alternative, non-invasive option," said Jim Knape, president and founder, VQ OrthoCare. "When used in conjunction, as the study confirms, the combination proves to be 37 percent more effective than BioniCare alone and 39 percent more effective than the brace alone. Together, patients are able to not only defer surgery, but return to an active, pain-free life in less time. "
Since its FDA clearance in 2003, BioniCare has been prescribed to more than 80,000 patients nationwide. BioniCare was awarded the 2010 Innovations in HealthCare℠ ABBY award for reducing costs of providing quality healthcare, as well as the 2010 TechAmerica High-Tech award for achievement in technology.
