CHARLESTON, WV, February 18, 2012
/24-7PressRelease/ -- The Center for Justice & Democracy released a new study on October 19, 2011, providing further evidence of how news coverage of jury verdicts tends to be deeply skewed, thereby promoting common misperceptions that juries frequently award outlandish verdicts for frivolous claims.
According to the report, news media focus on large plaintiff verdicts, while largely ignoring the more numerous cases where the defendant wins or the jury awards a relatively modest amount for the plaintiff. News accounts also fail to discuss the acts which led a jury to award a large verdict, or to explain that many jurisdictions have "caps" which limit how much an injured plaintiff can receive, regardless of how much a jury of his peers may think he is entitled to. Shrinking newsrooms, faster news cycles, and digital "headline" news services have contributed to this skewed reporting, and fueled the myth of a "broken" legal system.
The Center for Justice and Democracy is a non-profit organization which has released hundreds of studies, White papers and information sheets on civil justice issues. Its latest study,
Headline Blues: Civil Justice in the Age of News Media is available online.
