Excess Property and Rehabilitation specialists, Eddie Coleman and Hubie Tolson of UHF Development Group have made significant improvements to the center, helping lure some big name retailers to Kinston's growing community. After a major refurbishment of the former Lowe's Home Improvement store during the last 18 months, Westgate Plaza lured the nation's most prominent office retail supply store, Staples, which opened a 17,000 square foot store in spring of 2007. "We are delighted to have a proven commodity like Staples in Westgate Plaza. They are an excellent addition to our shopping center and the town of Kinston alike" said Coleman. Riding the wave of success with Staples, Westgate Plaza has added two new retailers this year in national fitness leader Gold's Gym and regional bedding retailer Mattress Rx of New Bern.
Gold's Gym opened earlier this year to a warm reception from Kinston residents. As the number one co-ed gym chain in the world, Gold's Gym has over 610 facilities in more than 30 countries. The Kinston location, operated by Mike Valentino of Wilmington, further expands their 15-location chain in Eastern NC and SC. "We're excited to be part of the new business mix at Westgate Plaza. Our 11,000 square foot fitness center provides our Kinston area members state of the art facilities, equipment and fitness programs," said Valentino.
Mattress Rx of New Bern is joining the new retail mix at Westgate Plaza by opening its third Eastern NC location later this month in an 8,000 square foot space next to Staples. "Mattress Rx is excited about entering the Kinston marketplace in such a great location. Centralizing our training and distribution operations in our new Kinston store will allow our brand to provide the highest level of service to customers as we continue to offer the largest mattress gallery on the Crystal Coast" said Mattress Rx owner, Chris Schenkel. The Town of Kinston is excited as well, "We are very pleased to have new businesses come to our community that will create jobs; increase the tax base and retail sales" said Mark Pope, Lenoir Economic Development.
