NEWPORT, RI, July 08, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Merchants in the Historic District of Newport, RI, have taken their first step in proving there is strength in numbers. They have arranged for their own Historic District Merchant Map to be designed, printed and distributed in time for the big July 4th celebration in Newport's historic Washington Square, the heart of Colonial Newport and the epicenter of the city's Historic District. The map links Newport's historic trade center with modern commerce and business.
The map is the brainchild of Robert Bailey, author of The Billionaire's Little Black Book, and Essie Dube, a graphic designer and owner of Gelissimo in Newport's Brick Market Place, whose passion is products made in the USA. Both are members of the Washington Square Roots (WSR) board of directors. The goal of the map is to assist tourists in locating area businesses, with the hope of bringing much-needed revenue to Historic District merchants. Proceeds will help to defray the costs of the Washington Square July 4th celebration.
Folded into a square, The Historic District Merchant Map is a visual reminder of the importance of Washington Square. It consists of several key elements: (1) a smaller, inset map with colored dots that indicate attractions in the Historic District, under which is a color-coded map key; (2) a calendar of Upcoming Festivities that covers major events from July 1 through December 31, 2010; and (3) a colorful array of affordable ads, all square in shape.
In keeping with the local unity theme, the printing was done in Rhode Island by a local shop and the design was donated by Dube. In addition, Bailey and Dube have created a Facebook Fan Page -- Historic Newport (RI) Merchants - on which each business can promote its own year-round events. They are also holding meetings to bring the various Historic District businesses together, so they can address their particular issues in "one voice" at City Council meetings.
At this writing, 20,000 maps are being folded and will be available to the public in a multitude of Newport locations, as well as at the rest stop on Route 95 in Richmond, prior to the July 4th celebration.
