WASHINGTON, DC, June 11, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As part of Nicaragua's strategy to promote the country as a tourist destination in the exterior, the Nicaraguan Tourism Board (INTUR, for its acronym in Spanish) and the private sector participated in EXPOTUR, an international tourism fair, held since 1984 in the city of San Jose, Costa Rica.

This year, more than 250 Central American service providers participated in the fair offering their products and services to international wholesale agencies from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Participants from Nicaragua's private sector included Alhambra Hotel, Plaza Colon Hotel, Punta Teonoste Hotel, Careli Tours, Parque Maritimo el Coco, La Gran Francia Hotel, Solentiname Tours and Vapues Tours.

Since the year 2009, EXPOTUR took a new turn as it opened its doors to the general public providing the opportunity for exhibitors to present their products to the Costa Rican population.

The importance of participating in this fair is that it offers the opportunity to negotiate with tourism service providers such as hotels and tour operators in Costa Rica and in other Central American countries, as well as with wholesale agencies from the U.S., creating the possibility of forming marketing alliances.

Additionally, INTUR has also launched a local campaign that consists of organizing regional fairs across Nicaragua to highlight each region's tourism potential. The theme of the campaign is "Nicaragua...Unique, Original", and will be executed in conjunction with small and medium companies of the tourism sector, local municipalities and other government institutions.

Preliminary statistics recently published by INTUR indicate that Nicaragua continued to grow in both tourist arrivals and tourism revenues during the first four months of 2010. Statistics indicate that arrivals grew in 8.9 percent, reaching 338,248 visitors, while revenues increased 22.5 percent up to US$99 million, when compared to the same period last year.
