/24-7PressRelease/ - LAKE PLACID, NY, July 27, 2008 - Recent reports covering the commercial airline industry in the U.S. have pointed to major scale-backs in flights and staff levels. The overall situation threatened to leave scores of airline pilots and other airline workers in need of new employment. Susan Friedmann, CSP, the niche marketing expert who successfully created her own niche as The Trade Show Coach, urged those affected to embrace entrepreneurship in the many niche markets that interest them. Author of "Riches in Niches: How to Make it BIG in a small Market," Friedmann has made it her mission to help entrepreneurs find success in niche markets.

"Unemployment, or even the fear of it, can be paralyzing,'" said Friedmann, CSP (Certified Speaking Professional). "But a scary upheaval in the status quo is also the motivator that has prompted some of the most successful entrepreneurs to make their mark in business. Furthermore, with their technical inquisitiveness and know-how, airline pilots are particularly well suited to start their own businesses in leading-edge areas of disruptive technology, the very niche markets sure to define the next generation of profitable industries."

Author of "Meeting and Event Planning for Dummies," Friedmann, now The Nichepreneur (TM) Coach, has turned her expertise to niche marketing for entrepreneurs. In her new book, "Riches in Niches: How to Make it BIG in a small Market," Friedmann shares the concepts that have enabled her to become a tradeshow marketing expert, a sought-after maven in her own niche who presents workshops at some of the most recognizable Fortune 500 corporations.

Recent reports have chronicled an apparent, precipitous decline in the U.S. commercial airline industry:

== Nearly 1,000 pilots for United Airlines are to lose their jobs, according to a USA Today report dated June 24.

== Midwest Air announced that it would be cutting flights to various cities currently within its radius of service, The Pioneer Press reported on July 21.

== American Airlines said that it would be eliminating 1,500 maintenance positions, according to a July 19th report in The Canadian Press, which went on to note that the company had also indicated plans to cut "900 flight attendant jobs and 200 pilot positions."

== According to a July 10th report in The Wall Street Journal, Northwest Airlines Corp. revealed that it would cut its workforce by 8.3 percent.

== Delta Air Lines showed a $1.04 billion loss in the second quarter of 2008, reported The Washington Post on July 17.

Major stories of airline pilots turned entrepreneurs are not new. For instance, an article published on March 20, 2007, in CNNMoney.com told the story of John Plaza, a former pilot for Northwest Airlines who resolved to launch a business in the production of biodiesel, a renewable energy that has enjoyed increasing popularity over the past few years. On April 25, 2008, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Plaza spoke at "Flying In a Carbon Constrained World," a conference that took place on the same day in Tacoma, Wash.

"The possibilities in niche markets are essentially endless, limited only by the imagination and ambition of budding entrepreneurs who strive to make their mark," said Friedmann. "Resourceful, technically inclined entrepreneurs such as former airline pilots are especially equipped to take advantage of the opportunities before them."

Friedmann advised airline pilots and other airline workers facing layoffs to embrace the change and launch companies in niche markets meaningful to them. She also encouraged them to follow her GEL Formula, a process for success described in "Riches in Niches: How to Make it BIG in a small Market." Those who follow the GEL Formula (Growing-Experience-Love) first look for markets that are "Growing." They then focus on their existing "Experience." After matching that existing experience with the growing markets calling for it, they finally make a decision on what to pursue by considering what they "Love."
