Now Hear This is Celebrating Better Hearing Month with Caregiver Education on Signs of Hearing Loss

As part of Better Hearing Month, Now Hear This is encouraging consumers and caregivers to be more aware of their hearing health and their aging parents' hearing health.

RALEIGH, NC, May 07, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Hearing loss currently affects more than 36 million Americans today. 1 in 3 people over the age of 60 and 1 in 2 people over the age of 85 have hearing loss. Hearing loss can be worsened by other factors such as diabetes, poor circulation, and certain medications.

On average, most Americans consider hearing loss a condition that is simply associated with aging, and don't realize that left untreated can lead to other health and emotional issues. In an effort to raise awareness for the growing number of Americans suffering from hearing loss, the American Academy of Audiology in conjunction with Now Hear This is celebrating Better Hearing Month this May.

As part of Better Hearing Month, Now Hear This is encouraging consumers and caregivers to be more aware of their hearing health and their aging parents' hearing health.

"Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises; ear infections, trauma, or ear disease; harm to the inner ear and ear drum; illness or certain medications; and deterioration due to normal aging process," explain Dr. Phillip Griffin, Au.D.

An audiologist is a highly educated and clinically experienced health-care professional who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating people with hearing loss and balance disorders. Hearing loss can affect patients of all ages - newborns, infants, babies, toddlers, children, teens, adults, and the elderly.

In contrast to eyesight, one of the most challenging features of hearing loss is that we don't really know what sounds we are actually missing which could have profound effects on other aspects of our health. As a caregiver, your parent may have a problem with their hearing and not know it. They need to be taken regularly to see an audiologist , especially if they have trouble hearing conversations in a noisy environment such as a restaurant, are unable to hear people talk without looking at them, or complain of a constant ringing in their ears.
