NRA Members and Gun Owners Warned to Beware of Tougher Gun Laws
A commentary published in the American Chronicle says the battle is not over, even though the Supreme Court has ruled on the right to own firearms.

/24-7PressRelease/ - SALT LAKE CITY, UT, June 28, 2008 - A commentary published in the American Chronicle family of 22 different publications warns that gun owners should not get too excited about the Supreme Court decision on gun rights.

The commentary by former member of the Utah House of Representatives, David M. Bresnahan, warns that gun control advocates are already hard at work to make gun laws tougher. It can be viewed at http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/66377

"In a way, the historic decision gives them [gun control advocates] a great opportunity. If gun owners view the Supreme Court decision as a reason to become complacent instead of diligent, they will actually lose as gun laws become more restrictive," said Bresnahan in the commentary.

The ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court confirms that the right to keep and bear arms in the Second Amendment to the Constitution means that individuals have the right to own firearms, but Bresnahan warns that gun owners should not think this means the battle over restrictive gun laws is over.

"I am genuinely thrilled by the historic decision of the Supreme Court, but at the same time I realize that the battle is not over. The only thing that has happened is that the gun control advocates have been given an opportunity to win big if gun owners rest on their laurels and think that the issue has been settled once and for all," said Bresnahan in the commentary.

The U.S. Supreme Court has published a copy of the decision. It is available at http://www.supremecourtus.gov/opinions/07pdf/07-290.pdf with the Adobe Reader.

Bresnahan teaches shooting merit badges to Boy Scouts and is certified as an instructor by the National Rifle Association (NRA). He is a life member of the NRA and the Gun Owners of America, and as a former member of the Utah House of Representatives he co-sponsored legislation that made it easier for people to get a concealed carry permit.

He is concerned that gun owners will now think that because of the Supreme Court decision there is no need for concern about restrictive gun laws. He said that what gun owners will see as a great victory will be regarded as an opportunity by gun control advocates.

"Gun owners need to participate in every discussion, hearing, and public meeting where gun laws are being considered at every level of government. Be a part of EVERY meeting and discussion as gun laws are revised. Do not give them the opportunity they think they now have," he advised.
