PITTSBURGH, PA, September 02, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Many critics believe that wind energy is virtually impossible in the African nation of Rwanda. In fact, a representative of the Belgian Technical Cooperation in Rwanda (BTC) has expressed his doubts this way: "I am not convinced. With my technical background and as an experienced sailor I am a little used to work with wind and meteorology, and really, I am not convinced of the wind potential in Rwanda". However, while the wind situation of Rwanda may be a matter of conviction for some, scientific facts remain most valuable to all.

In searching for such facts, Rwindalectric stumbled upon a company called 3TIER, which specializes in weather-driven renewable energy assessment and forecasting. Using 3Tier's web-based imagery tools, Rwindalectric noticed that, at a height of 80m, the Nyabihu District in the Northern Province of Rwanda may have wind speeds ranging from 6m/s to 9m/s. Up to this moment the Nyagatare District in the East had been thought by many to be the windiest region in Rwanda. After these findings, Rwindalectric makes Nyagatare the second windiest district of Rwanda.

Jackson Ndizeye, founder and president of Rwindalectric, went on to set up a personal phone conversation with Gad Gahiya, a local farmer from the Nyabihu District. According to Mr. Gahiya, the strongest winds of the Nyabihu District can be located in three of its twelve sectors, namely Jenda, Kabatwa and Bigogwe. Mr. Gahiya pointed out that sector Bigogwe is the windiest of the three.

While Rwindalectric's team is on its way to survey the wind patterns in Nyabihu, Mr. Ndizeye is already contemplating the idea of making Nyabihu District, more particularly, Bigogwe sector, home to Rwanda's first wind farm in the years to come.
