/24-7PressRelease/ - NEW YORK, NY, February 11, 2007 -- The fact that 45 million Americans, including more than 8 million children, are living without health coverage is one of our nation's most serious problems. As the price of health care continues to rise, fewer individuals and families can afford to pay for coverage. Eight out of ten uninsured Americans are in working families. Fewer small businesses are able to provide coverage for their employees, and those that do are struggling to hold on to the coverage they offer. It is a problem that affects all of us.

Cover the Uninsured Week (April 23-29) a project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is the nation's largest effort to promote the goal of affordable health coverage for all Americans. Cover the Uninsured Week is led by some of the most influential organizations in the United States. Hundreds of national and local organizations are lending their support. In hundreds of communities across the country, events will spotlight the fact that too many of us are living without health coverage. Health and enrollment fairs will bring together doctors, nurses, dentists, other health professionals, and members of the community.

Dr. Dennis Gage, an attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center has supported this event by initiating and chairing a community preventive health fair over the last eight years at Temple Israel Center in White Plains, NY. This years' Brotherhood health fair and blood drive will take place on March 25, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dr. Gage states "Our Health Fairs have been successful because of the volunteer efforts of physicians and health professionals lecturing on preventive health topics as well as obtaining sponsors. We have raised thousands of dollars which helped nonsectarian causes and helped purchase a defibrillator device for our synagogue". By bringing doctors, other health professionals, and members of the community together, we are able to inform the community and those who are uninsured about health, prevention, and available resources. The Health fair will also provide the following services: blood pressure screening, bone density test, body fat composition test, and a blood drive. Admission is free.

Dr. Dennis Gage, MD, FACP, Endocrinologist and author of The Thinderella Syndrome (Vantage Press, 2004) will speak on The Thinderella Syndrome and avoiding obesity from 12:10 pm to 12:30 pm. Visit http://www.templeisraelcenter.org for more information on speakers and directions.

While health fairs can give people who do not have health care coverage temporary access to basic preventive services and information, everyone should have access to health care services every day, not just during a health fair.
