FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, October 04, 2009
/24-7PressRelease/ -- Tanimura & Antle announced they are collaborating with TraceGains on a pilot project that will enable Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) compliance for field packed items. Tanimura & Antle has been an active participant in the Produce Traceability Initiative from its inception and representatives from the company serve on the advisory committee defining the PTI standard and designing PTI best practices.
Glenn Smith, VP Global Operations for TraceGains noted, "We are gratified that Tanimura & Antle showed confidence in TraceGains by selecting us to participate in this pilot project. Field pack is a challenging environment, and one that must be successfully navigated for PTI to gain broad industry acceptance. TraceGains is proving that labels can be generated in the field, key attributes captured, and information shared before product moves to the cooler. Such a solution is a powerful tool for the field pack produce industry to leverage PTI labeling into actionable information that can be used to manage the operation."
TraceGains will be exhibiting at the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit, October 2 - 5, 2009, in Anaheim, CA. Located at the Anaheim Convention Center, Booth #1082 and in the Traceability Learning Center, this event is one of the largest international events solely dedicated to fruit, vegetables and floral; Fresh Summit draws more than 17,000 attendees from 50 countries annually.
The mission at TraceGains (www.TraceGains.com) is to protect the brand of food and beverage clients by eliminating problems before product is shipped to the customer. If a problem does occur this unique solution can minimize the brand damage by using patented recall trace-back and track-forward technologies. A recall alert can be initiated within minutes, reducing potentially bad news to one news cycle, and saving customers millions of dollars in long-term brand rehabilitation costs. The Recall Detective analyzes critical risk factors, going beyond material movement tracking; the Recall Minimizer provides instant multiple scenarios for reduced brand damage.
Tanimura & Antle has a proven system for 100% trace back with one step forward and one step backward in the supply chain. The PTI pilot will identify potential improvements to this system and efficiency of operations. "We see this pilot project as a key component to our preparation for supply chain wide traceability," said Tom Casas, Vice President of Information Technology at Tanimura & Antle. "We expect to identify what enhancements will be needed in our harvesting processes to ensure a smooth rollout of PTI Compliance."
Tanimura & Antle surveyed several available solutions and chose to work with two PTI compliance vendors to individually evaluate each system's adaptability to Tanimura & Antle's harvest operations. Mike Antle, Executive Vice President of Harvest Operations at Tanimura & Antle commented, "We will be able to generate PTI case labels based on daily harvest requirements. The goal is to generate labels right in the field giving T&A flexibility to adjust in real-time to harvest requirements."
As labels are placed on cartons, the traceability information is captured into an electronic record, building in traceability right at the point of harvest. Information about the packed product is continually available to both the Operations and Sales teams while the product is in the field and en route to the cooler. This pilot program gives Tanimura & Antle the lead in enhancing customer solutions based on actual experience and practical requirements. By stepping out as an early adopter of this necessary industry technology, Tanimura & Antle hopes to encourage and be an example for other companies to develop similar point of harvest PTI systems.
More about the pilot program will be shared at Fresh Summit.
