BALTIMORE, MD, January 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Imagine you're at your computer, hard at work on a document that's secret, maybe even classified. To you, the screen looks perfectly fine, even as your eyes dart to one corner for a morsel of information and then back down the page to retrieve another fact. But to anybody else, even someone standing directly behind you, the words and images on the screen are gibberish.

The Chameleon system, being created by Oculis Labs founder Dr. Bill Anderson, makes that scenario a reality. "If someone literally stands behind you, even really close, they can't read a darn thing," he said.

. The patent-pending system works through a process Anderson describes as gaze tracking. "It looks at you while you're looking at the screen and it figures out exactly where you're looking, down to the character," he said. The rest of the screen is filled with nonsense, but "you don't notice those changes," he said.

Anderson, who has a doctorate in cryptology and has been in both the private and public sectors of the security product industry for about 20 years, had an "a-ha" moment while reading a book called "Consciousness Explained," by Dan Dennett, that discusses how humans perceive the world.

He knew his idea was a big one, and eventually he formed Oculis Labs Inc. in Owings Mills. Anderson has created a prototype with a first round of funding and is now showing the idea to interested federal agencies.

Though Chameleon is meant for security applications, some day it might be an accepted part of everyday computers, he said. If that happens, parents beware: Teens will no longer have to worry about you peering over their shoulders as they send instant messages.
