/24-7PressRelease/ - February 29, 2008 - Please forgive me if I'm a little delayed in posting news of the 80th Academy Awards ceremony (can you believe it's been that long??)... Truth is I'm only now slowly emerging out of that massive hangover long enough to write something coherent about the big night. Hey, who wouldn't have gone completely ape to find themselves in the heart of Tinseltown at the most prestigious movie award night with all your favorite stars shimmering in your very presence? I go there every year, mind you. But I daresay I celebrate profusely every time (I do love working for Cinema Casino!)
First up: Jon Steward was an absolute darling. Second stint as a host for the Oscars, and he doesn't get old at all. Charming, funny, slightly satirical, and for the ladies: a comfortable sight to look at for a good 2 hours... His opening speech alone had me looking forward to an evening full of wonderful quips... "These past three and a half months have been very tough. The town was torn apart by a bitter writer's strike, but I'm happy to say that the fight is over. So tonight, welcome to the makeup sex."
As for the red carpet: there were of course a few favorites (and some fashion suicides) but I'm going to be nice and not annihilate anyone today - there was enough blood in this year's movie nominations as it is - what I will say though, is that Jessica Alba was absolutely stunning in a plum strapless Marchesa gown accented with feathers and draped empire waistline, baby bump and all. Other ladies who deserve special mention are Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren, Miley Cyrus, Katherine Heigl and Heidi Klum, who stood out with varying hues of crimson on their elaborate gowns. This was this year's theme for the Oscars. The best is, these ladies' dresses will be auctioned at MyCokeRewards.com to raise awareness for heart disease in women.
And the winners are...
Best Picture went to 'There Will Be Blood', Best Director to the Coen brothers Joel and Ethan for 'No Country For Old Men'. They also took home another little gold man for Best Adapted screenplay. Best Actor was Daniel-Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood (we at Cinema Casino were rooting for Johnny Depp in Sweeny Todd, he's come sooo close three times already!), Best Actress went to Marion Cotillard in 'La Vie en Rose' (We love her. Her acceptance speech "Thank you life, thank you love," was just utterly refreshing.)
Best Supporting Actor went to Javier Bardem in 'No Country for Old Men' . He spoke in Spanish. I'm not sure, but I think he was saying "I'd especially like to thank Cinema Casino's gorgeous rep who's here tonight..." (sigh). I snapped out of daydream mode just in time to see Tilda Swinton pick up her statuette for Best Supporting Actress in appreciation for her performance in Michael Clayton - another well deserved award.
In other categories, the cute 'Ratatouille' won Best Animated Feature Film, Best Foreign Film went to 'Counterfeiters' from Austria, Best Original Screenplay went to 'Juno' (a movie about teenage pregnancy) and Best Documentary Feature went to 'Taxi to the Dark Side' (Alex Gibney's close-to-home look at what happens when a country wages a war on morality). I think this is round about the time my head started getting all dreamy about the after-parties that would follow... so I'm gonna stop here as far as the rest of the Oscar winners are concerned okay?
Did I mention that Owen Wilson looked very healthy indeed? I was sweetly surprised to see him right smack in the mix of things again, presenting an Oscar in that laid-back suaveness we've come to love him for...welcome back Owen.
Rumor has it...
That after shouting down the red carpet at Ryan Seacrest, Gary Busey accosted Seacrest interviewees Jennifer Garner and Laura Linney, hugging Linney and reportedly kissing Mrs. Affleck on the neck. Disgusted people everywhere were screaming "Where the heck is Mr. Affleck while his wife's neck is being served up as Busey sushi?" and "Why is Gary Busey even at the Oscars?" I might just be lynched for saying that I saw the scene myself, and personally, I don't think it was quite as bad as was related. Besides, the Oscars are everybody's night to shine...
Favourite Quotes of the Night...
"Does this town need a hug? What happened? 'No Country For Old Men,' 'Sweeney Todd,' 'There Will Be Blood'? All I can say is, thank God for teen pregnancy." -- Jon Stewart on the "psychopathic killer movies" nominated
"I don't have a lot to add to what I said earlier thank you." -- Ethan Coen upon accepting the Oscar, with brother Joel Coen, for Best Director.
"That's the closest I'll ever come to getting a knighthood." -- Best Actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis, accepting his award from 'The Queen' Oscar winner Helen Mirren
That's it then, Hollywood-heads. Oscar evening 2008 according to me, and what a show it was. Cinema Casino loves entertainment. And we do love to entertain...
So until next year's big Hollywood night: we'll keep you posted with the ins and outs of the big screen stars... keep it fabulous, people!
