RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA, June 16, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In a new FAQ published on OnlineAutoInsurance.com, the writers highlight a way to get cheaper insurance prices through making their cars safer and themselves safer motorists.

Taking certain measures can in some cases result in a discount on car insurance premiums, but it is often dependent on the types of safety measures taken and the types of auto coverage purchased.

State Farm, for instance, provides discounts in some states for having passive-restraint systems and factory-installed airbags that meet certain standards. But those usually only apply to personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments (medpay) coverage. This is because these types of financial protection cover injuries to the policyholder and passengers, so having occupant-safety devices may help lessen the severity of PIP or medpay claims.

When weighing the pros and cons of opting for extra safety devices, consider the following piece of advice from Oregon regulators:

"Automatic seat belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes can help lower your insurance costs and possibly save your life," the coverage regulators say. "You may save enough money on insurance over the life of your car to pay for these safety options."

On the other hand, some demographics of drivers can take the time to make themselves safer motorists and, in turn, could end up getting a discount that way. Most commonly, this applies to drivers over the age of 60 that complete defensive-driving courses meeting certain standards. In New York, for example, older drivers are entitled to a 10 percent discount for completing particular safety courses.

All motorists, though, can keep costs low by staying as claim- and accident-free as possible.
