"I appreciate products that are unusual and beautiful. For instance, we carry the popular Shinzi Kahto line, he is a well known Zakka designer that creates fun yet practical things you can use everyday, such as his "duex mugs" or his eyeglass cases. People see them and fall in love," said Becker. "That's what I want everyone to do, come to the store and fall in love with that special something that will make them happy."
Kir DeVries offerings range from the very affordable to the high end. And Kir DeVries makes gift giving easy by providing an individual shopping service as well as elegant gift wrap.
"While my most frequent customers are women, we have more and more men turning to the store to find that special something for the women in their lives, whether it's a girlfriend or a mother," said Becker. "Men appreciate the suggestions we give them and they are relieved that we will take care of everything, including handwriting special notes."
The economic downturn has challenged the big box stores. Recently, Sears reinstituted the old practice of "lay-away" to capture more customers. Forbes.com reports that retailers are slashing prices to lure customers into their stores. Boutique shops like Kir DeVries are able to more easily position themselves as unique, providing discerning customers with a satisfying shopping experience. Additionally, Kir DeVries seeks out products made in the USA, from individual designers and artists, which appeals to those concerned about the economy.
Becker offers this advice to retailers:
"Always anticipate the next trend and be ready to move quickly. Flexibility is key and customer service is critically important. Be willing to go the extra mile and you will create customer loyalty."
