COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, January 16, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Is your child a candidate for braces? If they are, it's important you start treatment as soon as your orthodontist recommends it. With early interception of malocclusion, your orthodontist can influence jaw growth and the alignment of permanent teeth. Without early treatment, malocclusion can escalate and cause your oral health to decline.

In the past, most people visited the orthodontist in their teenage years or even later in life. By then, the malocclusion probably progressed from mild to moderate, or maybe even severe. Nowadays, an orthodontist recommends parents take their children to the orthodontist at an early age.

"A patient can start orthodontic treatment as early as age six or seven. At this point in the patient's life, the jaw is still developing, and many orthodontic problems can be corrected during this developing period. Early treatment may be needed before all of the permanent teeth erupt. This type of treatment is called interceptive orthodontics or phase I, and it's one of the best ways I can determine how a patient's jaw growth will affect the alignment of permanent teeth," explains Dr. Suter, Colorado Springs orthodontist.

Interceptive orthodontic treatment targets the jaw growth to try and make more room for the permanent teeth and to help correct existing jaw discrepancies. For example, if the jawbone is too small, teeth will erupt too close together, causing teeth to be crowded. Dr. Suter can also treat bite issues with Phase I treatment, including crossbite, overbite and underbite. In interceptive orthodontics, a palatal expander or partial braces are typically used to create more space in the mouth and to align the teeth for better esthetics and function. Early treatment typically will last anywhere from six to fourteen months, and Phase II treatment or full treatment may be needed several years later depending on how the remaining adult teeth erupt.

To determine the type of orthodontic treatment, Dr. Suter will assess your child's teeth to see if the malocclusion relates to spacing or jaw alignment issues, or maybe even both.
Signs of malocclusion are pretty easy to spot, such as the following:

- Irregular and excessive spacing between teeth
- Overlapping teeth (crowded)
- Front teeth excessively protruding over the lower teeth (overbite)
- Lower front teeth overlapping the upper front teeth (underbite)
- Upper and lower teeth not touching (open bite)
