Paranormal Horror Film Mamiwata Enters Pre-Production Stage, Scheduled to Begin Filming This Spring

Four American researchers travel to the heart of the African jungle in search of Iboga, a potential cure to drug addiction. In the process, they unwittingly unleash the wrath of Mamiwata, the African mermaid who guards the sacred shrub.

Science is a blanket you use to cover your eyes when the lights go out. A way to ignore the truth. But that doesn't make you any safer, does it?

NEWPORT BEACH, CA, February 12, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gabon Films announced today that principal photography for "MAMIWATA" will commence this spring. The film is currently casting for leads Nathan Dale (a professor leading the group), Matt Emmerich (a soft-spoken student madly in love with his wife), Emily Emmerich (Matt's wife, who's still suffering from the loss of their child), Megan Chow (an Asian pupil who struggles with her sexuality), and Andy Patel (a lustful undergraduate). The film will be shooting in and around Los Angeles, California, and Gabon, Africa.

"MAMIWATA" is based on true events taken from real testimonies from people who claim to have encountered the African Mermaid, across Africa. Danielle Fisher developed the story, with Chris Ferrantino adapting it into a feature-length script. Ms. Fisher will co-direct with partner Jordan Best.

"MAMIWATA" tells the story of scientist and professor Nathan Dale, who dreams of a breakthrough in one of the world's most complex illnesses: drug addiction. When an old colleague summons him to study the Iboga root--a plant which is said to help drug addicts overcome their dependency--he seizes the opportunity and embarks on a research trip to Mouila, Gabon. Along with his best students--Megan, Andy, and Matt and Emily -- he hopes to find the solution to a drug addiction free world.

At first everything seems to go as planned. But as their research brings them deeper into places even the Gabonese villagers themselves fear to disturb, they learn that Iboga is not just a candidate for drug addiction treatment; for the natives, it is a gateway to the spirits' world.

When hallucinations start to devour the scientists' reality, they lose their ability to distinguish the world in which they exist. Soon the line between the spirits' world and reality becomes blurry. Will they find the way out? Only the Spirit of The Ngounie River knows if they are worthy enough to survive.

From pre-production to post-production, Mamiwata team will engage fans of horror, thriller, and paranormal movies with a series of fun contests, gift cards, and movie ticket giveaways.
