The latest recognition comes from the national Green Building Awards, for Portico at Pacific Highlands Ranch in San Diego. This high-density neighborhood of detached homes earned an Honorable Mention as the Project of the Year, Production Single Family Home.
Sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the prestigious Green Building Awards annually honors home builders, remodelers, home builders' associations and other organizations for advancing green building through innovative design and construction techniques, excellent educational programs and successful advocacy efforts. Winners were celebrated May 8 in Dallas as a featured event of the 11th annual National Green Building Conference.
Portico homes feature Pardee Homes' LivingSmart program, first introduced in 2001 at Pacific Highlands Ranch and now part of 24 communities. The program supplies EarthSmart , EnergySmart , HealthSmart and WaterSmart features aimed at conserving energy, improving indoor air quality, saving water and reducing consumption of natural resources. In April, Pardee Homes made a broader commitment to LivingSmart, and will include its benefits in all upcoming new home projects, as well as most current projects with homes under construction.
Portico's homes are also certified as California Green Builder designs and have been honored for their architectural excellence in several regional and national design/planning competitions. As part of Pacific Highlands Ranch, the homes contribute to a master-planned community where smart-growth development anchors environmentally friendly planning and land use measures Pardee Homes initiated for this 1300-acre parcel.
The Green Building Awards are part of NAHB's National Green Building Program, NAHB Green, which includes education, advocacy, marketing and certification services for green homes. NAHBGreen debuted in February 2008, and since that time, award applications have quadrupled, according to NAHB Green Building Subcommittee Chair Eric Borsting, a California home builder. "Pardee Homes shows how far residential green building has come," said Borsting. "Portico is a great illustration of sustainable, environmentally responsible construction and a good example for our members as NAHB continues to lead green building into the mainstream."
