/24-7PressRelease/ -- Patricia L. Gerbarg, MD, an integrative mental health expert based in New York state, will discuss alternative treatments for families of kids with special needs with host Shane Kulman on Your Beautiful Child radio program Sunday, February 12, 2012 11:00 am ET, live on the Internet at yourbeautifulchild.com/yourbeautifulchildradio.php. Many parents of children with special needs experience stress, anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Dr. Gerbarg will discuss how to promote optimal wellness for parents and kids living with ADHD, depression, and anxiety. She will discuss new integrative treatments that combine standard approaches with herbs, nutrients, and mind-body practices. Integrative medicine can relieve symptoms, augment the effects of medication, and reduce the amount of medication needed for optimal outcomes.
Treatments are included from the award-winning book Dr. Gerbarg co-authored with Drs. Richard P. Brown and Dr. Philip Muskin, How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton, 2009), and her newest book co-authored with Dr. Brown, Non-Drug Treatments for ADHD: New Options for Kids, Parents, and Clinicians (WW Norton, 2012) which include the use of SAMe, Rhodiola rosea, QiGong, yoga, Coherent Breathing, neurofeedback, and other integrative approaches. An audio (2012) supplement to these books with research findings and clinical cases on the latest breakthroughs in integrative approaches to manage stress-related disorders, is available at morethansound.com under the title Breath~Body~Mind.
Dr. Gerbarg is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College. She graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. In addition to her clinical practice in Kingston, NY, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from stress, anxiety, PTSD, and mass disasters such at the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, the southeast Asian tsunami, the Horizon Gulf oil spill, war in Sudan, and military personnel. She and her co-author husband, psychiatrist Richard P. Brown, MD, maintain a web site providing health information and resources at HaveAHealthyMind.com.
