Ms. Wickwire served as the director of student services and special education for the South Bay Union High School District in Redondo Beach, California. For 20 years, she served as a teacher, school psychologist, and administrator in the same district. She began her career in education in 1946 as a teacher in Ricketts, Iowa. For four years, she also served as a counselor and teacher in the Waverly-Shell Rock school district. Additionally, she was a reading consultant and head dormitory counselor at the University of Iowa from 1955 to 1957.
Ms. Wickwire also has experience working as a consultant in management and education. Since 1981, she has served as president of the Nellor Wickwire Group. Furthermore, she was a member of the executive board of multiple organizations, including the Beach Cities Symphony Association from 1970 to 1982. She also served as the chairman of Friends of California State University at Dominguez Hills from 1981 to 1985.
Ms. Wickwire graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from the University of Northern Iowa in 1951 and a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa in 1959. She received a PhD from the University of Texas in 1971, and she continued her studies as a postgraduate student at the University of Southern California, the University of California--Los Angeles, and California State University at Long Beach. She has been certified by the state of California to practice as a licensed educational psychologist and marriage and family therapist. She is also nationally certified to practice as a counselor. Ms. Wickwire has published articles in professional and academic journals on various topics in her field.
Ms. Wickwire served her community as president of the California Women's Caucus from 1993 to 1995 and from 2003 to 2006. She has also been an active member of multiple organizations. Since 1991, she has served as president of the American Association for Career Education. She also served on the executive board and as chapter president of the American Association of University Women. She was media chair of the National Career Development Association for six years. She also served as chairman of the Los Angeles County Directors of Pupil Services and the Los Angeles County Southwest Board of District Administrators for Special Education.
Beyond these accomplishments and positions, Ms. Wickwire served the California Association for Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance as a director in 1981 and president from 1984 to 1985, from 1998 to 2000, and from 2004 to 2005. For 26 years, she held the title of chair of the International Career Association Network, and for more than a decade, she worked in a wide range of capacities for the American Counseling Association. She also held various positions in the Association of Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, including chair of position statements and standards from 2001 to 2010.
Ms. Wickwire was the president of the Los Angeles County Personnel and Guidance Association, and journal editor, executive board member, and president of the California Association for Counseling and Development. She was also on the board of directors of the California Association of School Psychologists, the California Education Foundation, and the Association of California School Administrators. Ms. Wickwire is also a member of the American Psychological Association and the World Future Society.
Ms. Wickwire is the daughter of Willian McKinley and Clara Rose (Pautsch) Nellor. She has been married to Robert James Wickwire for 60 years. They have one child, William James.
Ms. Wickwire was honored by the International Women's Review Board for her outstanding contributions; the organizations commended her with the Women's Inner Circle of Achievement Award in 2008. The National Career Development Association and the American Association for Career Education honored her with the Kenneth Hoyt Lifetime Career Education Achievement Award in 2014. In 2016, she was honored by the Stanford University H.B. McDaniel Hall of Fame for Exceptional Contributions to the Profession of Counseling and Guidance. She has been featured in more than 100 editions of Who's Who publications, including Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
