Pavlina Rumcheva Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Her Work in Statistical Research

Dr. Rumcheva's work is important to the health and safety of many people



    SILVER SPRING, MD, November 17, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Pavlina Rumcheva has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Rumcheva is an expert statistician whose work has been integral to the health and safety of millions of people. As a senior service fellow in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics, she conducts research on statistical methods used to analyze data. In addition, she advises on the use of statistical software and analyzes how statistical errors can affect air quality and the health of a given population. Having joined the agency in 2012, she represented the center at the 2013 International Year of Statistics and was chair of the Statistics in Health session at the Symposium of the U.S. Statistical Agencies in November 2013.

Prior to obtaining her current role, Dr. Rumcheva earned a Master of Science in Mathematics, specializing in Probability and Statistics, from Sofia University in Bulgaria in 2000, and she also served as a teaching assistant for the Department of Economics and Business Administration in 1999 and 2000. She went on to earn a PhD in Statistics from the University of Florida in 2005, again serving as a teaching assistant for the Department of Statistics from 2000 to 2002. From 2002 to 2005, she became an assistant research statistician for the Children's Oncology Group Statistics and Data Center for the school.

Following her graduation, she went to New York, NY to serve as a research statistician for C-BASS LLC from 2005 to 2007. In 2008, she joined Goldman Sachs, where she utilized her skills to analyze markets until 2009. After working in the American financial industry, she moved across the world to Sydney, Australia to work in their financial sector. She became a risk analyst for GE Capital in 2009 and 2010, where she estimated financial reserves and provided economic data. She then began lecturing at the Sydney School of Public Health at the University of Sydney from 2010 to 2012.

An accomplished and prolific researcher, she is currently working on a manuscript about mixed effects models for directional data and has published several papers, the most recent being "An improved test of equality of mean directions for the Langevin-von Mises-Fisher Distribution" in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics. In addition to her writings, she has presented at professional conferences, symposia and university meetings. Outside of the professional realm, she enjoys opera, classical music, visiting museums, attending film festivals, and traveling.
