The National Provider Identifier was established as part of the Administration Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). This mandated the adoption of a standard unique identifier for health care providers. The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) collects identifying information on health care providers and assigns each a unique National Provider Identifier (NPI).
PiMS provides functionality to support multiple variations of submitting claims with an NPI and/or a legacy number, dependent upon third party requirements. PiMS allows each third party (i.e. insurance company) the ability to house the NPI number, the legacy number, or both NPI and legacy number, which will populate on each claim. These rules can be changed quickly when third party requirements change.
