WINTHROP, MA, June 24, 2011
/24-7PressRelease/ -- In early May 2005 the sailboat Almeisan departed Connecticut on a five-day voyage to Bermuda. Four days into the voyage the crew found itself in the jaws of a powerful storm. During the night the boat was struck by a massive breaking wave, capsized and was crippled. In the ensuing chaos the captain and first mate were swept overboard during a knockdown and were carried away by enormous seas.
One of three crewmembers who remained on the vessel as it was torn apart by the seas and failed rescue attempts, Chris Ferrer, recounted his first-hand experience of this tragic loss. Ferrer's story has been written by Michael Tougias in his book "Overboard": A true blue-water odyssey of disaster and survival.
Chris Ferrer grew up on Long Island, NY and has been sailing since college. Prior to his attempted voyage to Bermuda he owned a Freedom 28 sloop and plied the coastal waters of New England. He currently lives in Boston and works an IT administrator for a pharmaceutical company in Marlborough, MA.
Pelagic Sailing Club's mission is to promote safety on the water, seamanship sailing, and good fellowship.
It's a great way to test the waters with a variety of boats if you're looking to buy a boat, otherwise crewing can be a lot of fun as well. Thirty-five percent of Pelagic's members are boat owners, the other 65% are crew. "As you can see," says Coles, "the percentage of crew to boat owners is high, so the club is looking for new boat owner applicants. Plus, it's an excellent way to meet other like-minded boaters."
