Safety workshops are generously taught by members of the Police Department and by County Emergency Services. Children are taught about OnStar, a General Motors assistance program that allows vehicle occupants to call for help in case of accident or other misfortune. A mat is placed behind an SUV with measurements in feet. A child is asked to stand on the mat and back up until the driver can see the child. Amazingly enough, with large SUVs, a child must usually stand more than 18 feet behind the vehicle for the driver to see him. Children learn, therefore, the importance of staying away from large SUVs so they are not accidentally run over. Other safety stations teach about vehicle interior temperature and trunk safety. A thermometer is placed inside a vehicle with an external display to show children how dangerously hot vehicles can become. As for trunk safety, children are placed one at a time into a trunk and taught to pull the release inside the trunk to find freedom. Trunk safety is important in case of abduction or unwise play.
