STERLING HEIGHTS, MI, July 19, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- While there are many tooth replacement options available on the market, only one aims to replace the lost tooth structures and offer a permanent replacement for a missing tooth: the dental implant. At her Sterling Heights, Michigan dentist office, Dr. Sheela Neral offers dental implants as an advantage over traditional tooth replacement options, such as dental bridges or a partial denture.
"Dental implants are an option for patients wanting to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth," explains Dr. Neral, a Sterling Height family dentist. "One of their greatest benefits is their natural look and appearance -- many patients forget they even have an artificial tooth."
Dental implants consist of three parts. The first is the actual dental implant, which looks like a small titanium screw. These implants are available in different sizes and shapes based on where the implant will be placed. The implant is surgically placed in the jaw as a replacement for the tooth root that used to grow there.
Placed over the dental implant is an abutment. This is a connector between the implant and the dental crown, which Dr. Neral creates at her Sterling Heights dentist office. Crowns are also sometimes called caps because they cap or cover an abutment, re-creating the tooth's appearance.
Dr. Neral can evaluate a patient's dental structures to determine if a dental implant could benefit him or her. While rare, some patients are not candidates for a dental implant because they have experienced significant jawbone loss where the lost or missing tooth used to be. Also, patients that may have affected healing abilities, such as smokers and those with diabetes, may not be candidates for the procedure.
However, Dr. Neral finds many of her Sterling Heights patients are excellent candidates for dental implants. With the right patient selection, dental implants have a 98 percent success rate. Her patients can even choose to replace an entire upper or lower set of missing teeth with strategically placed dental implants. She says her patients may opt for a dental implant over a denture because the dental implant will not slip or slide out of place, particularly when eating and speaking.
"Dental implants offer benefits patients often didn't expect," explains Dr. Neral, a Sterling Heights implant dentist. "From boosted confidence to an improved smile, dental implants can be life-enhancing."
