WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, August 31, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Prognition Corp., the physical therapy exercise software company that owns Mavenlive, has been awarded two grants from Canada's National Research Council for further enhancements to Mavenlive.

Mavenlive is a web-based physical therapy electronic documentation software that prescribes rehabilitation exercises, presents best practice patient assessments and generates customizable documentation, reports and letters to referring doctors automatically, said President Dr. Jay.

One grant is focused on developing the ability to collect outcome measures so the efficacy of different treatments can be documented.

"Mavenlive is designed to make it easier for clinicians to implement best practices, and we hope eventually to expand its use into many fields in health care," Winburn said. "Evidence needs to be gathered to determine what truly a best practice is."

This is an ongoing need, as new treatment modalities constantly are introduced. Although randomized double-blind studies are the gold standard, they are only done in relatively few situations and cost millions of dollars, he said. Today, health care workers rely on anecdotal evidence. For example, someone tells someone else that something seems to work. Analyzing outcome measures after collecting them will be a major step up from anecdotal evidence.

The second grant will be used to develop a community for professionals to share knowledge.

"Right now, the most commonly accepted number is that it takes approximately 17 years from when something is known for it to become commonly implemented in practice," Winburn said. "This is a huge problem and this issue is addressed at several government-sponsored conferences each year."

The Mavenlive rehabilitation software community will have aspects of a wiki and a social community, he said.

The fundamental technology that Prognition developed uses a filter made from information gathered during patient assessments. That information is searched against all previous knowledge entered into the system to see if it is applicable.

If a bit of knowledge is applicable, it will be presented to the healthcare worker, regardless of whether it has been known for a week or for decades.

"This is a different paradigm of search that is not a keyword search," Winburn said. "Unlike a keyword search, it solves the paradox of searching for what you don't know."

Being awarded these two grants makes it possible for Prognition Corp. to continue improving Mavenlive, making it increasingly helpful to those who use it in their physical therapy practices.
