LARCHMONT, NY, April 27, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Clarke's Sixth Fine Art Auction of May 4, 2009, one week from today, will feature 300 lots of paintings, sculpture, signed prints, artist books, and antique frames.

The Rare
Rare works include the second John Beigel to appear at auction in the past 150 years; a John Henry Foley 1849 Famine sculpture found in a Larchmont basement; a 52" x 40" 1941 Jean Xceron oil; an 1870 EA Lanceray bronze; a large 19th C. Orientalist oil of Cairo; Antonio Lopez Garcia's 1968 nude; an Elmer Gandy oil; an original Henry Major oil; a signed 1879 Pre-Raphaelite oil on panel; and the Biblia Sacra of Dali, personally inscribed with an original pencil drawing. The 1961 Eva Hesse, purchased in the presence of the artist, possesses full provenance, and arrives fresh-to-market forty-eight years later.

Collections
Clarke's Fine Art Auction contains 40 Rockport and Doll & Richards paintings and sculptures from Anthony Thieme, Emile Gruppe, Antonio Cirino, Iver Rose, William Trost Richards, AC Goodwin, Al Czerepak, and others. The Doll & Richards side of this estate also supplied a 19th C. Barbizon painting signed Diaz, possibly by Narcisse Diaz, and an early Venice oil faintly inscribed Guardi on the stretcher.

A Second Collection comes from an old New York horseman's estate with 19th C. horse paintings from J.S. Noble, J. W Cole and others, along with antique Hudson River paintings, and a Leslie Thrasher oil on board, reputed to be a Liberty magazine cover.

African-American Art
African-American art, a Clarke specialty, will feature the historically important 1960 self-portrait by Robert Thompson, a large Abstract Experssionist oil from Manuel Hughes, a carousel oil from Richard Dempsey, a jazz pianist from Oliver Johnson, and a 1968-69 Russ Thompson. The Thompson self-portrait comes with complete provenance and was exhibited at The New School in 1969.

International art includes a Paul Henry classic oil, an Aegean surrealistic Georgios Derpapas, Maximilien Luce's Charleroi, and a monumental Franticek Cermak in original ornate frame. Clarke believes that one of its Italian painting by Carlo Donati was exhibited in Venice in 1908, a Pierre Parsus was a "Prix Antral" competitior, and its Daphne Henrion-Hardy bronze of her lover, the novelist Arthur Koestler, is also present in Britain's National Portrait Gallery. Clarke is also featuring a collection of works exhibited in the 1960's at London's Grosvenor Gallery, recently deaccessioned by a Jewish institution.

Founder and owner Ronan Clarke notes that "it is our strongest and deepest sale in eleven years." He adds, "we've seen a lot of interest in our Xceron and Derpapas, the Thompson and his old friend Manuel Hughes, the Eva Hesse, the Paul Henry, the Dali, and the Jose De Creeft."
