Plans Get Green Light for New London Development

A major UK house builder has exchanged contracts with the Greater London Authority on one of the most sought-after developments in London and the South East of England.

LONDON, ENGLAND, October 17, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Barratt Developments have exchanged contracts for an 83 hectare development site located in Coulsdon, Croydon on the site of the former Cane Hill hospital. A total of 650 new build homes will be built which includes 163 affordable new build homes and around half of the total homes built will provide housing for families. The homes are expected to be eco-friendly using sustainable construction practices.

The site which has been derelict for approximately 20 years will be integrated with the nearby town of Coulsdon and the planning framework for the development will be finalised by 2014. The planning process is set to commence between Barratt Developments, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Croydon Council. Planning will also need to incorporate enhancements of existing open spaces. Over 70,000 square foot of business and retail development with potential leisure facilities needs to be planned, approved and constructed.

The site is part of the strategy for the Homes and Communities Agency to re-use brown field sites for redevelopment purposes and for the provision of new homes. Affordable housing will also form part of the residential development to help towards easing the shortage of affordable housing in the Greater London area. All of the new homes will be built in accordance with Code 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The new development will also help to provide construction jobs as well as create jobs and business opportunities that will boost the local economy in Coulsdon and Croydon. A landmark water tower and a listed chapel building on the development site will be retained and renovated as part of the regeneration.

Boris Johnson, The Mayor of London, welcomed the progress as a huge step forward in the development of much needed and quality housing.

The deal is worth GBP250 million.
