That amount is more than many authors earn in a lifetime of writing. Not bad for a print-on-demand book that has never seen the inside of a bookstore. How did this happen? Well for starters, the author switched publishers.
This best-selling author (whose name is being kept confidential) was making a paltry amount at his first print-on-demand publisher, AuthorHouse. Unsatisfied with his low royalty he made the move to Outskirts Press, Inc. a leading print-on-demand company. In doing so, he increased his royalty from 15% to 55% of his retail price.
"This author is doing all the right things to be successful in the new world of on-demand publishing," says President and CEO of Outskirts Press Brent Sampson. "He works within the print-on-demand channels to make the sales. He does not concern himself with bookstores and instead sells exclusively through online channels. Most importantly, he switched to a royalty system that allows him to earn more per book." Before switching to Outskirts Press, he was making $3.74 on a retail price of $24.95. Now he is making nearly $14 per book. "We allow our authors to set their own retail price and royalty," notes Sampson. "The system puts more money in the author's pocket, where it belongs."
For years, print-on-demand critics have said there is no money in POD. Every quarter, Outskirts Press, Inc. proves them wrong.
