Podiatrist in San Antonio, TX Warns Women to Take Care When Wearing Heels

SAN ANTONIO, TX, January 21, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Premier podiatrist in San Antonio, Dr. Ed Davis, is educating patients about the urgency to protect feet and ankles year round. Dr. Davis strongly recommends that patients think twice before they wear certain shoes, or perform various activities.

When high heels are worn, they can often lead to bunions, heel pain and other problems if they are not properly worn in moderation. Women often wear high heels to lengthen their legs, but when improperly worn, heels can cause women severe pain.

"Bunions, and heel pain appear to be the most common complaints from patients. This is why it is more important than ever to take those extra precautions when it comes to protecting your feet. We perform a lot of our day-to-day activities on our feet, and developing a bunion or heel pain will further prevent patients from completing those tasks," cautions Dr. Ed Davis, podiatrist in San Antonio, TX.

Bunions are nine times more common in women than in men. The most common cause of bunions is poor foot function, but the prolonged wearing of poorly fitting shoes, usually those with a narrow, pointed toe box that squeezes the toes into an unnatural position, can accelerate the problem.

"When women wear heels it is important to look more for comfort than style. Make sure you have shoes that fit correctly by checking to see if there is up to half an inch of space in the shoe beyond the longest toe and that the shoes are not too narrow. If women wear heels only for certain occasions, they can save their feet, giving them a greater chance to remain healthy and active," said Dr. Davis in reference to bunions in San Antonio.

Bunions are misaligned big toe joints that can become swollen and tender, causing the first joint of the big toe to slant outward, and the second joint to angle toward the other toes. Bunions tend to be hereditary, but can often be aggravated by shoes that are too narrow, as seen with high heels in women, in the forefoot and toe. Surgery by this San Antonio podiatrist is frequently recommended to correct the problem and provide relief.

"Bunions are quite common and painful. Being hereditary it is important that patients take extra precautions when it comes to their feet if other family members have suffered from bunions. 90 percent of sufferers tend to be women, which makes it even more important for women to watch what they wear," said Dr. Davis referencing San Antonio bunions.

Women are urged to protect their feet when wearing heels to avoid developing bunions and heel pain in San Antonio, in addition to several other ailments. Diabetic patients have a greater risk of developing foot and ankle health problems, therefore heels should be avoided.
