Indeed portable storage devices, such as the increasingly popular USB sticks, have been the focus of media attention in recent months, with study after study demonstrating how vulnerable they are to viruses, worms, Trojans and other security problems that could open the door to identity thieves.
Though they have the same name, portable storage units have a much better security track record than their technology counterpart. "Portable storage containers are built from robust, heavy steel construction, making them difficult to penetrate," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director the National Portable Storage Association, or NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "You can even opt to install alarm systems on these containerized storage units for added security."
These are important options with the rise in identity theft. Indeed, identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States. According to Javelin Strategy and Research, there were 8.9 million victims of identity theft in 2006. Thieves walked way with $56.6 billion, with the average fraud costing $6,278 per victim. For all the publicity, the problem is growing worse.
"You hear about online identity theft and database breaches at credit card companies," said NPSA Operations Manager Joel Rathbone. "But organizations that store hard copies of records containing personal data are also targets. Portable storage units offer a safe, secure way for organizations to comply with federal regulations for storing records."
